Full course description
This MiniCourse is self-paced and takes 2 to 4 hours to complete. At the end of the MiniCourse, you will be able define the unique advantages of using mice in genetic and genomic research. You will receive a certificate and digital badge for completing the MiniCourse. In order to claim a certificate or badge for this MiniCourse, you must go through the Core Content module and take the self-review quiz (scoring at least 70%).
The following topics will be discussed:
- Mendelian genetics
- Origins of laboratory mice and inbred mouse strains
- Mating schemes for classical genetic resources
- Genetic diversity in the Collaborative Cross (CC) and Diversity Outbred (DO) mice
- Overview of the basic inbred strain experiment
- Basic genetics of the mouse
- Mouse strain nomenclature
By the end of the MiniCourse, you will be able to:
- Discover how Mendelian genetics led to the inbred strain experiment
- Define the inbred strain and its significance to genetics
- Define different types of mating schemes including incross, outcross, intercross, and backcross
- Utilize mating schemes to create new genetic resources including consomics, congenics, recombinant inbreds, and coisogenics
- Define new genetically diverse mouse models; the Collaborative Cross and the Diversity Outbred
- Analyze the process for the basic inbred strain experiment
- Properly interpret nomenclature for various mouse model systems
This MiniCourse is designed to meet the needs of graduate and post-doctoral students, research assistants, advanced undergraduate students, and advanced animal care technicians.
